VAPORTEC VCI's work |
| |
Vapour
Corrosion Inhibitors (VCI's)
are similar to organic adsorption type inhibitors and also possess
a high vapour pressure.
As a consequence, these VCI's can be used to inhibit atmospheric
corrosion of metals. A concentration of VCI is placed in the vicinity
of the metal to be protected.
The VCI sublimes (i.e. changes from a solid phase to a gaseous
phase, without becoming a liquid) and the gaseous molecules
of the VCI concentrate near the metal surface. These gaseous molecules
then adsorb onto the metal surface forming a mono-molecular layer
of corrosion protection.
For a compound to be classified as a VCI, it must possess two basic
properties, i.e.
(i) it must be volatile and
(ii) the vapour alone must be able to retard the corrosion
rate.
VCI's are specific, in terms of the type of the metal or alloy,
environmental conditions, temperature and concentration. It is important
to always use VCI's in excess as in some cases to little inhibitor
can actually cause accelerated corrosion. VCI's are available in
a number of different forms and are designed to meet specific applications. |
| Vaportec
VCI's are blends of special compounds having differential vapour
pressures. This ensures quick and long lasting passivation of
all metals. |
